Sudanese Woman Sentenced To Death For Apostasy to be Freed

Sudanese officials are reportedly planning to free a woman earlier sentenced to death for apostasy following calls from foreign governments and mounting pressure from the international community which condemned the "barbaric" ruling.
Meriam Ibrahim, 27, was sentenced to death by hanging after refusing to recant her Christian faith. According to the judge who ruled on the case, Ibrahim, who was raised by her Christian mother, was supposed to be regarded as a Muslim since her father had been one.

Additionally, Ibrahim was sentenced to 100 lashings for adultery in 2013. The court decided that her marriage to Christian and U.S. citizen Daniel Wani in 2011 was not valid because their Christian union was not recognized under Islamic law.
Earlier this week, Ibrahim gave birth to a daughter, the couple's second child, while in prison. Their first child, a 20 month old son, has been staying with Ibrahim in prison since February.
The case had been followed by international outrage which regarded the sentencing as a violation of human rights.
British Prime Minister David Cameron had described it as "barbaric" and outdated.
"Religious freedom is an absolute, fundamental human right. I urge the government of Sudan to overturn the sentence and immediately provide appropriate support and medical care for her and her children," he said.
Former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair regarded the case as a "sickening distortion of faith," according to Times.
Labor Party Leader Ed Miliband considered the ruling to be "utterly appaling".
"Nobody should be persecuted because of the religion they practice or the person they fall in love with," he added.
Human rights organization Amnesty International had begun a campaign petitioning for the release of the Sudanese woman.
Sudan's Undersecretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdullahi al-Azreg, announced that Sudan guarantees religious freedom and thus, will protect Ibrahim. He says Ibrahim will be released in a few days following legal procedures.
He is certain that the execution will not push through, according to The Sunday Times.
