The Ridley Scott biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings ended the three-week reign of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 earning US$24.5 million for its opening weekend.

However, the Christian Bale-starrer still has to earn more before it breaks even its colossal budget of US$140 million.

Of the films in the Top 5, Chris Rock's Top Five, which landed at No. 4, was the only film other than Exodus to enjoy a wide release this weekend, however, the film only enjoyed release in 979 theaters compared to Exodus' 3,503.

Top Five earned US$7.2 million over the weekend.

Mockingjay, with a gross income of US$277.4 million, is now the second highest grossing film of 2014 after Guardians of the Galaxy

The film dropped to No. 2 spot although gross noticeably dropped by 40 percent compared to last weekend's earnings.

Penguins of Madagascar placed at No. 3, earning US$7.3 million, a 33 percent decrease compared to last week's, while Big Hero 6 rounded the Top 5 at US$6.1 million, a drop of 23 percent.

The weekend earnings at the box-office was generally hailed as a good weekend, particularly for family-friendly films.

It is expected that next weekend's earnings will definitely amp up with the debut of the third-and final installment of the Hobbit film, live-action Annie and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

Expect for a battle in box-office supremacy as given that Mockingjay and Exodus is still being shown, while the new films will open in more than 3,000 theaters. Then, The Interview and Disney's Into the Woods are also slated to spice up the box office as they hit cinemas just before Christmas.
