Afghan President Angry Over Bergdahl-Taliban Swap

The Afghan president is outraged that he had not been informed of the release of five Taliban prisoners in exchange for an American soldier, according to Reuters.
A source revealed the information on Monday, a day after the successful swap of captured U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban prisoners, who were released in Qatar's custody.

According to Reuters, an unnamed source revealed that the incident had only served to intensify President Hamid Karzai's distrust of U.S. intervention in the country. Karzai had also expressed his concern about any occurrence of current and future negotiations behind his back.
Karzai questioned the success of negotiations between the U.S. and the Talibans when he had been working so hard to engage the rebels in peace talks but had been met with little success.
Afghanistan has been dealing with the Taliban insurgency since 2004.
The successful swap however, did not mean that peace talks would be revived between the Afghan government and the rebels.
Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid said that the swap did not serve as a hopeful sign that peace talks would be revived between the group and the Afghan government since they "don't believe in the peace process."
Moreover, Karzai's office maintained that the deal had breached international law.
"No government can transfer citizens of a country to a third country as prisoners," according to the statement released by Karzai's press office.
Meanwhile, Afghans have also expressed outrage over the swap, claiming that the U.S. government had not considered the ramifications of the release of the five prisoners.
Many believe the prisoners were dangerous and that they would easily resume their work as part of the Taliban movement.
According the Yahoo, the five prisoners were considered "high risk" and had not been recommended for release by the Pentagon.
A senior official of Afghanistan's secret agency said he is certain the five would go back and fight. He added that the top-ranking Taliban prisoners would be dangerous since they have contacts far-reaching into regional and international terrorist networks.
Critics also pointed out that the swap had only served U.S. purpose in finishing off its loose ends in connection with the Afghanistan War.
Bergdahl had been the last remaining American soldier captured from conflicts with Afghanistan.
It is reported that the U.S. plans to have fully withdrawn its troops by 2016.
