U.S. Navy Unveils its Spy Drone, "GhostSwimmer"

The U.S. Navy revealed its newest underwater drone that swims like a tuna and has perfect camouflage.

The Navy gave this reconnaissance drone the nickname, "Silent Nemo," after the famous Disney clownfish. The drone's official name, however, is GhostSwimmer.

This robot is a five-foot long, 100 pound drone currently in operational service as an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).

The drone swims exactly like a fish by swinging its tail fin back and forth at regular intervals. It has unique propulsion and control capabilities.

This type of bio-mimicry is complemented by its ability to silently move undetected underwater. This stealth capability will allow the U.S. Navy to conduct missions more securely, even in low visibility conditions.

GhostSwimmer may swim like a tuna but it looks more like a shark because of its dorsal fin. This UUV can dive to depths ranging from 10 inches to 300 feet.

GhostSwimmer permits the conduct of more successful surveillance missions for the Navy. It will also keep divers and sailors out of harm's way.

Silent Nemo's battery allows the drone to operate for longer periods of time. The UUV can be controlled from a laptop via a 500-foot tether.

The UUV was deployed December 11 at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Fort Story in Virginia. It's now gathering data about tides, currents and weather conditions.

The drone will conduct combat missions in the future.
