The numerous offenses of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity had caught up with the campus organization that officials of the San Diego State University ordered it closed and removed from the campus on Wednesday.
The latest straw was the anti-rape demonstration on November 21 when members of the fraternity allegedly waved dildos and threw eggs at the Take Back The Night protesters. The university also cited their record of alcoholism and hazing as reasons for the fraternity's closure, reports Huffington Post.
The Delta Sigma Phi national office followed the university's order and shuttered its SDSU chapter because of widespread misconduct among members. It stressed that Delta Sigma Phi won't tolerate wanton disregard of the fraternity's policies and standards. The closure will be until 2016.
The SDSU chapter admitted that their members waved sex toys at the marchers but denied they threw the eggs at marchers.
Eric Rivera, SDSU vice president for student affairs, said in a statement, "There is no place in our campus community for the type of ongoing behaviors displayed by those involved with this fraternity chapter."
The repercussion of Delta Sigma Phi's action was felt across the university which suspended the social activities of all fraternities.
The Sigma Delta Phi was established in 1899 at the College of the City of New York. It is now down to 103 active chapters in the U.S. after the closure of its SDSU chapter. Its alumni number about 85,000, while current undergraduates are over 5,000.
According to its website, the mission of the fraternity is to make "better students, better leaders, better citizen, better professionals ... better men."
