The mother was arrested a day after eight children - aged 18 months to 14 years - were found dead in a house in Cairns. The police have not disclosed how the children died.
The eight child was the woman's niece, the police said.
Post mortems were set to be conducted on the children to determine the cause of death, which sources said was not natural.
Asnicar said police investigators are no longer looking for anybody else following the arrest of the mother.
The police said the incident was isolated and that the community at large is safe.
The bodies of the children were discovered by the woman's 20-year-old son who arrived home on Friday morning.
Responding policemen were shocked to see the bloodied bodies of the young children. At the scene, the police discovered a number of weapons, including knives.
The crime came as a shocker to the community considering that the family involved had not been investigated by social services and that the residence was not a problem house
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot said the incident was an "unspeakable crime".
It occurred just days after three people, including the gunman, died at a siege of a cafe in Sydney.
The mother has not been charged as of this posting, the police said.
