Chinese search engine giant Baidu, Inc. recently announced it's developed a new speech recognition system, dubbed "Deep Speech".
Baidu's new speech recognition technology has the capability to recognize and interpret voice input in noisy environments such as restaurants. Reports say the technology proved accurate nearly 81 per cent of the time.

"Deep learning, trained on a huge dataset -- over 100,000 hours of synthesized data -- is letting us achieve significant improvements in speech recognition," said Andrew Ng, chief scientist of Baidu Research.
"I'm excited by this progress, because I believe speech will transform mobile devices, as well as the Internet of Things. This is just the beginning."
Deep speech uses deep learning algorithms, which is a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI). Deep learning intends to train computer hardware systems and software to reproduce the behavior of the human brain.
Andrew Ng, a former AI chief of Google, was hired by Baidu last May to lead the Chinese company's AI research and development center based in Silicon Valley, California.
Ng's previous experience and expertise include the development of a computer system with the ability to teach itself how to recognize objects by viewing millions of images.
Baidu is also currently using AI to improve its search engine technology, and other computing tasks.
"It's used very successfully in advertising. We have not released revenue numbers on the specific impact, but it is significant." said Ng.
