Seattle Pacific University experienced a wave of terror on Thursday when a gunman opened fire on campus killing one person and injuring at least three others.

The shooting began inside the foyer of Otto Miller Hall, a building which houses the university's science, math and engineering departments.

The lone gunman opened fire upon entering the campus building but was subdued when a student acting as the building monitor sprayed the perpetrator with mace when he stopped to reload his weapon. Bystanders were then able to pin the shooter down until police arrived.

Officials have not yet released information in regards to the identity of the culprit although he is currently in police custody.

The shooter was armed with a shotgun and a handgun, authorities stated.

The university was closed down for 90 minutes after the shooter was detained, and reopened around 5 p.m. although all evening classes were cancelled for the day.

The incident is only one in a recent surge of mass shooting to strike the nation. Late last month, a young man named Elliot Rodger opened fire on the University of California, Santa Barbara campus killing six and injuring 22 others before dying of a gunshot wound the head.

Public shooting have caused government authorities to question their stance on gun control and some groups have been calling for gun bans in hopes that it will prevent similar crimes in the future.

Seattle Pacific University has a small student body of around 4,200 students and is a Christian university near downtown Seattle.
