After 40 Years, Armless Man Gets Brain-Controlled Prosthetic Limbs

After getting into an electrical accident more than four decades ago, Leslie Baugh had to have both his arms amputated. The worst part was that it had to be removed from the shoulder.

Baugh thought that he would never be able to feel what it was like to have arms; however, thanks to the contributions of experts working hard in the field of prosthetic technology, Baugh now has both arms once again.

According to Mashable, credit goes to the scientists at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. The experts have chosen Leslie Baugh to be the first man ever to have modular prosthetic limbs (MPL), which are limbs that can be controlled by the wearer's mind.

Of course, it was not that easy. The Colorado-born man had to undergo medical procedures that involved the revival of dead nerves and having others reassigned to his chest. These steps were critical to the operation so that he could gain control over the prosthetic arms through the use of his nerves. Known as "re-enverating," the process came with discomfort and pain.

However, it was worth it.

As The Blaze has reported, Baugh also had to exert time and effort for the training required to make use of the prosthetic arms. Fortunately, the experts at the laboratory made it a lot easier for the amputee.

Albert Chi, a trauma surgeon from Johns Hopkins, explained that they needed to reassign existing nerves so that they "can make it possible for people who have had upper-arm amputations to control their prosthetic devices by merely thinking about the action they want to perform."
