A lot of people think that smoking marijuana is harmless and that it has medicinal factors to help a number of ailments. However, good evidence showed that smoking pot has negative effects on a person’s health.

A new review said that people who smoke marijuana can become addicted. Those who are in their teenage years while using the drug can be at risk as abnormalities linked to the areas of the brain deemed important for memory and learning has been found, according to the review.

The review also added that marijuana can cause some short term effects to users. This includes impaired judgment and coordination including difficulty in academics and even increases the risk of incurring car accidents. Furthermore, the review said that those who smoke pot regularly have increased symptoms of chronic bronchitis including cough and phlegm production.

On the other hand, some studies say that the effects of marijuana to adult smokers are reversible while other studies said that the effects are persistent. The National Institute on Drug Abuse director Dr. Nora Volkow said that more research should be conducted regarding the topic to be able to come up with a definite answer.

Volkow said that legal drugs including tobacco and alcohol are still accounted for a great number of diseases than from smoking pot. Volkow added that this is because these are
widely available than marijuana.

The New England Journal of Medicine issued on June 5 said that as policy change towards legalizing marijuana, it would be prudent to say that there would be more people smoking pot. It also added that negative health issues would also arise following the increase in usage.

The researchers said that there should be more study from the government in making policies that would show how marijuana usage would affect the health of the public. Volkow pointed out that it has been known that legalizing marijuana would increase the number of car accidents and the number of teens using the drug. Thus, more research should be done.

Meanwhile, a CNN post cited senior andrology lecturer Dr. Allan Pacey from UK’s University of Sheffield writing a new review which states that using marijuana may increase infertility among men.

The study from Dr. Pacy’s journal Human Reproduction said that smoking pot among men affects the morphology of the sperm, as well as its shape and size. The fertility assessment was conducted among 1,970 men where researchers collected their specimen.
