The investigation last Monday was the latest in a series of arrests and prosecutions of central government officials allegedly involved in corruption activities.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had declared a war on corruption upon his assumption into office two years ago.
Part of the war against corruption was the successive arrests of government officials which did not spare senior associates of Xi's predecessors.
Ling, 58, was a trusted aide of Jintao and was reportedly being considered as a candidate for a promotion to the Politburo.
Steve Tsang who studies Chinese politics in England said President Xi has become confident in implementing the law even extending it to cover past associates and leaders.
"What it points to is that Xi will sustain the anticorruption campaign and use it to strengthen his own position in the party and to make the party a more effective instrument of control, and for him to exercise that control," Tsang said.
Ling, under Hu Jintao, was the director of the leadership nerve center, the General Office of the Party's Central Committee but was demoted to to a less influential post and failed to advance to the Politburo.
Ling's downfall on Monday followed the fate of senior officials under Hu Jintao who have been toppled from office because of corruption charges.
The senior associates are being investigated for corruption charges and some of them have been removed from their posts.
