How to Spot Santa/the International Space Station on Christmas Eve

Track of the International Space Station

(Photo : NASA/T. Credner & S. Kohle, AlltheSky.com) The International Space Station (ISS) glides above the northern horizon of Tübingen in southern Germany. It is brilliantly visible due to brightly reflected sunlight. The path is dashed since the photo consists of 70 added exposures with little breaks in between.

Ever wonder where the International Space Station (ISS) is in that infinite vastness above you?

NASA's  Spot the Station website lets viewers locate the ISS wherever they might be on the planet. The site notifies viewers via email or smartphone about the exact time when the ISS will pass overhead.

On Christmas Eve, anyone can spot Santa or rather, the ISS, at around 6:35 P.M. EST. Thousands of fans have already shared the app and website thousands of times in the last few weeks, keeping the story of Santa alive.

Apps that track the ISS are easy to download on anyone's smartphone so this sighting won't be missed assuming the skies are clear on Christmas Eve.

Apps such as the GoISSWatch app available for iOS has proven to be accurate. The app's very intuitive and easy to access as it uses the compass feature on the iPhone to tell the user where to face to spot the ISS crossing overhead. The app can also notify the user five minutes ahead of the time the ISS is overhead.

Another app called the ISS Finder looks more reminiscent of the iOS 8 design. It also offers valuable information about the date and time for best seeing the ISS. It also has some interesting information about the ISS crew.

For Android users, the ISS Detector Satellite Tracker can track the next ISS sighting using a 3D tracking diagram similar to the GoISSWatch app. Otherwise, notifications via email or text messages can be sent by NASA's dedicated website as users need only to sign up on the website.
