Tesla Motors Inc. officially announced Friday an update of its phased out two-seater sports car- - the Tesla Roadster.
The Tesla Roadster update will now be called "Roadster 3.0," and will feature a 40 percent to 50 percent increase in range.
Tesla's new battery technology can provide an energy increase of up to 31 percent compared to the original Tesla Roadster's lithium ion battery. This gives the Roadster 3.0 a 400 mile range, enough for a non-stop road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles or vice versa.

Last week, the California-based company introduced a pilot battery swap scheme specifically for Model S Sedans that will allow drivers to swap their drained battery for freshly charged one's so they can continue their road trip. This pilot program was conducted across Harris Ranch to Interstate 5.
Tesla Motors' Chief Product Architect and CEO Elon Musk confirmed the upgrade is specifically for the Roadster 3.0 but the Model S will also get its own upgrade "long term."
