Chiung Yao Wins Plagiarism Lawsuit Against Yu Zheng

After suing Mainland Chinese scriptwriter and producer Yu Zheng for plagiarism, Taiwanese novelist and renowned producer Chiung Yao has reportedly won the lawsuit as announced by the Beijing court last December 25.

Earlier this year, the well-known novelist accused Yu of plagiarism. Chiung is said to have made claims that the producer based his plot for the historical television series, 'Palace 3: The Lost Daughter' on her novel, 'Plum Blossom Scar'.

Said historical drama, which was jointly directed by Li Hui Zhu and Zheng Wei En, and features actress Shirley Dai, began airing in April via Hunan TV. However, shortly after it debuted, Chiung filed the lawsuit.

After much deliberation, it was announced on Christmas day that Chiung has won the case.

As a result of losing the case, media reports say that the Beijing court ordered the Chinese producer and scriptwriter, along with four other companies that were involved in the lawsuit, to pay a total of $5 million RMB or an estimated $807,200 USD to Chiung.

In addition, the court also ordered the producer to make a public apology to the 'Plum Blossom Scar' writer. On the one hand, the four companies which were involved in the case were mandated by the Beijing court to cease all distribution and broadcast of 'Palace 3: The Lost Daughter.'

After the lawsuit has been announced to the public, more than a hundred Mainland Chinese screenwriters have extended their support to the romance novel writer, agreeing on her stand against Yu. Said screenwriters have signed a joint declaration which aims to condemn all forms of plagiarism.

On the other hand, following the result of the lawsuit, Yu's camp stated that the producer will be issuing an appeal to the court. This announcement was made through the official Weibo account of Yu's studio.
