On December 26, 2004 a tsunami caused by a magnitude of 9.1 earthquake flooded an immeasurable amount of water and hurling giant waves rapidly towards the Indian Ocean. The wave swept away cities, lives, and properties from the Indonesian coast up to the East of Africa.
Survivors of the tsunami commemorated the sorrowful event by holding beach side memorials and religious services in Asia, while some countries in Europe also joined the anniversary, as some of the tourists from their continent also died in that calamity.
It was indeed a painful moment for the victims and survivors, but hope was still found amidst what happened. According to one of the survivors who lost two of his sons when the train in Indonesia was derailed and was suddenly swept away reaching Sri Lanka's shoreline, no one has to remind them of that awful day as he would always grieve until his time on earth has passed.
There were more than 35,000 fatalities in Sri Lanka due the tsunami, including the 2,000 people who were inside the world's worst train accident in history recorded.
On the other hand, about 6,000 people were found dead in the southern part of India in Tamil Nadu. The local survivors said that the fear they had since that day will remain up to this day in their lives.
Tsunami survivor Liguvariyal Daveed shared her sentiments, saying whenever they see the ocean; they easily recall that it is the same ocean that killed thousands of lives in their place. The fear of the ocean has become unimaginable to the locals that they all moved to a new place that the government provided them away from the sea to start a new life.
