Zhangjiajie is located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, about 265 kilometers to the northwest of Changsha, the provincial capital. Wulingyuan Scenic Area in Zhangjiajie has been designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.

Zhangjiajie is known for its beautiful forests, odd-shaped rock formations, exquisite canyons, limestone caves, and jaw-dropping panoramic views. The entire area is covered with towering sandstone, quartz cliffs and dense unspoiled forests over limestone caves lying underneath. The hills present different views to visitors with the changing of seasons.

Autumn story in Zhangjiajie

In autumn, Zhangjiajie scenic area is not crowded with people. The queues for the elevators, ropeways and environmental-friendly vehicles are much shorter than those in summer. When walking through the plank roads along the mountains, you can enjoy a wonderful quiet moment.

Although it is late autumn, it still maintained at a temperature of ten to twenty degrees centigrade on the mountain. Zhangjiajie shows a unique beauty style in autumn, green pines stand still on the hillside. Widespread forests cover the mountaintops far away. The only difference is the shrubbery across the mountainside has turned red and yellow. The wonderful place becomes more colorful and brilliant. Standing at Yuanjiajie, if you look far into the gorge, you can find some families on the mountain. Those are Tujia people who live here from generation to generation. Not far from these houses, there are many pieces of terraced fields. Some of them have been harvested. Seeing such isolated rural scenery on the mountaintop, you can't help feeling that is a mirage.

Foggy weather is more often in autumn day. The clouds in the canyon rise up and down, the outlook of Zhangjiajie mountain area will change every several minutes. When you are riding a ropeway along the canyon, the scenery is quite marvelous. You will feel like entering a time machine, a peak falls into your eye, suddenly it disappears in the thick mist again.
