Will BPG Eliminate JPEG?

The WebP image format from Google was one of the earliest attempts to provide users with an alternative to the ubiquitous JPEG format.

WebP was released four years ago, but hasn't been able to dislodge JPEG. Mozilla then tried its luck with its very own mozjpeg designed to decrease file sizes, albeit by less than 10 percent, but still retaining compatibility with JPEG.

It failed to become a great alternative to the extremely popular JPEG, though.

Enter BPG.

Better Portable Graphics or BPG is said to produce image files that have roughly the same quality as JPEG, claims Fabric Bellard, creator of BPG and responsible for the development of the FFMPEG and QEMU.

The key difference is that BPG is able to reduce file sizes down to 50 percent. In order for BPG to work, however, it has to use it a relatively newer type of codec known as x265.

Digital Trends said the award-winning Bellard, a programmer of French descent, claims BPG has quite a number of benefits that make it better than JPEG.

Bellard said BPG has a much improved compression ratio, which is probably BPG's greatest advantage over JPEG. The better compression ratio means a photo, regardless of its file size, will be rendered in much better quality.

For those who interested on seeing the difference between these BPG and JPEG, there are comparison tools that you can use.
