Cult Classic Game 'Grim Fandango' to Receive a Makeover Courtesy of Sony

Sony announced at its E3 2014 press conference today that the behemoth gaming company will be remaking the classic Grim Fandango game from the now defunct LucasArts.

Sony plans on teaming up with Disney, who now owns the rights to the game, to remaster Grim Fandango exclusively for PS4 and Playstation Vita.

Grim Fandango was originally released in 1998 and received positive reviews, quickly rising to the top as a cult classic.

Tim Schafer was the original game's project leader and combined elements of Aztec beliefs and film noir to create a game in which players must converse with others and gather clues in order to solve puzzles and progress through different levels.

The world of Grim Fandango is laid out in the Land of the Dead where recently departed souls must journey before reaching their final destination, known as the Ninth Underworld. The game centers around the character of travel agent Manuel "Manny" Calavera as he attempts to save a recently arrived soul named Mercedes "Meche" Colomar during her journey to the Ninth Underworld.

Despite receiving several accolades and being named one of the top ten games of all time, Grim Fandango was considered a commercial failure and a major contributing factor in LucasArts' demise.

However, even after Sony undertakes a major remake of the game, experts think it is unlikely that the new version of Grim Fandango will sell too many copies. Instead, the move is looked upon more as an attempt by Sony to connect with avid Playstation fans and to make sure the company maintains its reputation producing consoles which are "for the players."

Grim Fandango will undergo the re-mastering beneath the careful eye of none other than Tim Schafer and his gaming company Double Fine Productions which he founded in 2000 after more than a decade with LucasArts.
