Facebook’s “Year in Review” Feature Slammed as Insensitive by Grieving Users

(Photo : Reuters) After a year of planning, Facebook has finally opened an Artificial Intelligence Lab in Paris with an intention to work more closely with the AI community in France.
Facebook's "Year in Review" feature has humiliated the company by reviving painful memories for users who suffered tragic events in 2014.
The issues started to surface after Facebook began to deliver its auto-generated yearly recap to its users earlier this month.
For blogger and author Eric Meyer, whose six-year-old daughter died during the year, it was a horrific shock to see his year in review with a photo of his late daughter. Meyer shared his grief on his blog, prompting a Facebook official associated with the development of this feature to send an apologetic email to him.

"There wasn't enough thought given to cases like mine ... or anyone who had a bad year. The design is for the ideal user, the happy, upbeat, good-life user. It doesn't take other user cases into account," Meyer added.
Meyer's complaint quickly went viral on Twitter and other social media.
Online news publisher Om Malik stated it was "a rude and very real reminder that, no matter how well-intentioned, our software-enabled society is far from being empathetic and understanding of human reality."
The automated feature has the delete button but it's hidden. Facebook owned-up to its mistake and declared that its team behind this feature "can do better" in the future.
The lesson of this controversy is that developers need to be neutral and aware when highlighting particular content to avoid hurting grieving persons more.
