Most Cancer is Caused by Bad Luck Not by Genes or Bad Lifestyle Choices

A new study reveals two-thirds of all cancer types are apparently caused by sheer bad luck and are not really transferred from parents or even triggered by factors such as smoking or diet.

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore declared random DNA mutations are responsible for the majority of cancers.

The report states only one third of the overall cancer cause is attributed to environmental factors and bad genes while two-thirds is just pure bad luck. This bad luck is apparently caused by random mutations from normal and cancer-free stem cells.

Researchers say this finding is pivotal in further understanding cancer and devising strategies that can decrease mortality rates.

This study analyzed 31 types of cancer. Scientists determined that out of those different types, 22 cancers that include pancreatic, bone, testicular and brain related among many others are just caused by random DNA mutations.

It is now estimated that 65 percent of all cancers are produced and caused by these random mutations.

All cancers known to man are caused by a combination of bad luck, environmental factors and heredity, according to Bert Vogelstein from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Scientists have developed a model that presents how these three factors can contribute to cancer development.

The study demonstrates how environmental factors such as smoking and other poor lifestyle choices can add to this bad luck. Scientists and medical experts still believe the best way to approach this fatal disease is with early detection and surgery.

This study was published in this week's edition of the journal, Science.
