Celebrating the New Year may mean drinking too much champagne and what one gets is the inevitable hangover.

Champagne is the traditional alcoholic beverage during this festive season. Glasses of Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier are responsible for the worst hangovers in any alcohol drink. Luckily, there's a science as to why champagne triggers the worst hangovers.

The carbon dioxide in wine produces a faster alcohol absorption rate, according to Boris Tabakoff, a pharmacology professor from the University of Colorado. This means champagne causes blood alcohol levels in the brain and body to rise faster when someone drinks champagne, a carbonated drink, as opposed to other alcoholic beverages that aren't carbonated.

Two-thirds of people who drink champagne get drunk faster. This buzz isn't all that pretty since the faster the alcohol absorption, the worse the hangover.

Tabakoff says a hangover is caused by brain inflammation from alcohol consumption. The brain is also affected by alcohol's depressant qualities. This is why any stimuli such as bright lights and loud noise can seem more heightened after a night of binge drinking.

For those suffering from a post-New Year hangover, here are some cures that can alleviate this situation. Drinking a glass of water per cocktail is believed to lessen the occurrence of a hangover.

Eating garlic and drinking peppermint tea and ginger ale are also known to protect the stomach from hangovers. Hangovers are usually caused by dehydration, so drinking Gatorade and eating bananas can regain strength and lost electrolytes.
