A key eye witness surnamed Zong from Xiamen told Shanghai Daily that they were pushed forward by a tremendous crowd behind them. He recounts that they wanted to get up and go to the riverfront region, but had no choice. A crowd coming from the front area abruptly started to push them back. They tumbled down and were among layers of individuals.

The savage rush along the notable Bund region has killed 36 and harmed 49 by 11am today, the Shanghai government said.

Two more harmed were sent to hospitals facilities for treatment yesterday evening. By 11am, 31 individuals were still in the doctors' watch. Among them, 13 were seriously harmed. An investigation is still in progress.

He recounts that they could not like to get up and go at the riverfront region, yet we had no choice. Abruptly a crowd from the front started to push them back. They tumbled down and were among layers of individuals covered.

He included: "I only managed to keep my head above the pile of bodies, and I began to feel numbness in my legs. Several minutes later, police pulled us off one another, one by one. It was so terrible. A friend of mine went missing."

Zong said he continued attempting to telephone his companion and just figured out his fate at around 1:13am, when a medical caretaker grabbed the call and let him know his companion was in Changzhen Hospital.

Standing dismally outside the crisis room today, Zong said, "I am still waiting for more information. They told me he was in serious condition. I am afraid he may have died."

The stampede, which occurred about 11pm in Chen Yi Square across from the Peace Hotel, began when a large number of people trying tried to move up to the riverfront esplanade were blocked, according to witnesses. Those who fell were trampled on by others in panic.

"We just were passing by the square. There was a huge crowd, and we were pushed forward and didn't know where to go. Police ordered us to move back, but we were unable to move. That lasted for about 10 minutes. Some girls, including my friend Luo Dali, fainted and fell on the ground. I tried to protect her head from the stampede. It was an unbelievable nightmare. We managed to get a policeman to help us call an ambulance." Yu Ping, another eyewitness recounted his ordeal to Shanghai Daily

Luo who is admitted at Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital under doctor's attention. Her guardians, who live in Anhui Province, were informed and are on the way to Shanghai.
