Ever since LG has released its newest TV product line, people have been saving up for their own OLED TV. But what exactly is OLED? And why is it being touted as the next generation technology not only for televisions, but for a wide array of lighting systems too?
According to LG, OLED makes use of organic components that, when is introduced to electric currents, lights up. This is basically what the latest TVs that the company is offering do in order to produce that outstanding image and video quality. Much thanks to the technology behind OLED, televisions with large screen sizes are able to produce generate resolution that was once thought to be nearly impossible.

As cited by Fortune, the OLED technology is responsible for producing the level of brightness that you will find in most smartphones nowadays. According to experts, this is going to take the world by storm in the next half decade or so. There is one huge problem with this though; the fact that this particular technology is extremely expensive, with each of the fixtures said to be worth thousands and thousands of dollars.
Fortunately, technology companies are continuously striving to make OLED more accessible, which basically translates to being more affordable in the future.
One such company is the Baltimore-based Pixelligent Technologies.
Pixelligent is currently working on the development of nanocrystals that are covered in lubricant. This particular material form what is descried as "tentacles," and they have been found to be effective in the prevention of clumping, which leads to a greater amount of light being able to pass through. So when the nanocrystals are set in OLED panels, they generate up to 50 percent more light. To top everything off, Craig Bandes, the CEO of Pixelligent Technologies, explains that what they are developing can do this for "a fraction of the cost it would take to create those lumens any other way."
