Two suspected drug addicts have been arrested and detained in Zhejiang on Thursday for causing alarm and scandal in two cities in the province.

One of the suspects was identified with the surname Ma who hostaged a fruit shop worker for US$16,000 on Thursday. The crime scene was located just 100 meters away from the Hangzhou Police Department, allowing authorities to respond in a matter of 10 minutes thereby resulting to Ma’s arrest.

Authorities said the apprehended drug addict was just recently released from a rehab center in Sichuan last June 9. Hangzhou Police Department’s representative Du Yuquan said the ransom money being asked by the 30 year old drug addict is still under investigation.

The fruit shop assistant whom he held hostage was brought to the hospital due to shock. No serious injuries were caused during the hostage taking.

On the same day, another drug addict was apprehended in Wenzhou after he blew up a package downtown. The suspect was identified as a 57 year old man surnamed Hu. According to authorities, Hu was not in stable mental condition after he overdosed on a prohibited drug identified as crystal methamphetamine.

Authorities are still investigating his motives for setting up the explosive package made from firecrackers and lighters. No injuries were reported during the incident.

A grocery store owner was near the area when the first package Hu set up exploded. Cai Shouhai, 60, went out of his store and knocked the second package off Hu’s hands.

According to Cai, he was inside his store when the first explosive went off with a loud sound. He said he noticed Hu carrying another explosive material which he tried to light but failed after several attempts. Cai said he went behind Hu and knocked down the second explosive package.

People praised the move done by Cai but he said it was what every responsible citizen should do. Cai added that the kung fu skills he had learned for years gave him the confidence to knock the package off Hu’s hands.
