Michigan is set to enforce the use of recreation passports that allow access to Detroit's Belle Isle Park, its 102nd state park.

On February 1, all vehicles passing though Belle Isle are required to have a recreation passport. February marks the 102nd anniversary of Belle Isle.

Belle Isle became a state park under a 30-year lease agreement with Detroit. Recreation passports are mandatory for vehicles entering state parks.

In previous years, vehicles could enter Belle Isle without a recreation passport until the vehicle owner's next registration renewal date.

A recreational pass can be bought at Belle Isle at the island's administration building. The passes cost US$11 for vehicles, US$5 for motorcyclists and US$16 for buses. The pass is valid until the motorist's next license plate registration renewal date.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and those using public transportation can enter the park for free.
