Ethan Hawke could have landed the role of Doctor Strange before Marvel signed Benedict Cumberbatch to star on Marvel's upcoming superhero film.
Hawke had actually collaborated with Scott Derrickson, who is slated to direct Doctor Strange, on Sinister.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hawke really came "as close as anybody could" to being cast as the out-of-this-world superhero.
Hawke even said that had Scott offered him the role, he'd willingly oblige. He even revealed that he has "a sneaky suspicion that Scott wanted me for that, too."
However, Hawke is daunted of the huge task of promoting and marketing a huge superhero film, which often entails the cast to go on tour just to lure moviegoers to see the film.
That, he believes is "a tremendous amount of salesmanship" that requires "tremendous amount of time" to make the picture succeed.
"They're making movies at a high rate, and they're making them successfully," he said. "I'm totally open to doing something like that," he mentioned.
Ethan Hawke is now a top contender to the Oscar's top acting honors, thanks to his portrayal of an American boy whose life was the subject of the film Boyhood. The actor has already garnered multiple nominations as best actor in various award giving bodies, including the Screen Actors Guild Award and Golden Globes.
