The tournament poster for the French Open tennis tournament, Roland Garros, will be designed by Chinese artist Du Zhenjun.

The Grand Slam event has a 124-year old pedigree. The posters for the tournament are a matter of French cultural pride.

Du joins a roster of fellow artists who have also designed the poster previously like Spanish painter Joan Miró, American artist Arman and British sculptor David Nash.

While majority of Du's work has been done using digital multimedia elements, the Chinese artist returned to the Chinese ink of his roots for his Roland Garros poster. He was recently interviewed by China Real Time where he spoke about how the piece came about.

Reporters pointed out that the poster had a very vintage style that was not readily apparent in Du's intricate and detailed contemporary pieces.

While Du mostly works on contemporary art, including more digital and multimedia methods, he often likes to use the brush to paint the design draft for designs of contemporary art. Over time, the drafts he makes with the brush have become a style for him.

Du also recounted how the poster was commissioned. He said that in the middle of 2014, Galerie Lelong accompanied a collector friend to Du's studio in Paris where they began talking about the possibility of designing a poster.

Initially, he was not excited for the project. He had never done posters before as they were not his forte.

However, when the Roland Garros and the collector came back with a number of posters, he began to understand the purpose of the poster, which is to show off the artist's style.

The poster forms Roland Garros' second connection to a Chinese success story, with the first being female tennis player Li Na who won her first Grand Slam in Paris 2011.

When asked about her, Du said that China should thank Li as her achievement have changed a country's sports trends.
