U.S. President Barack Obama will use his veto power against the proposed legislation for the Keystone XL pipeline, the White House said in a statement.

According to White House press secretary Josh Earnest, if the bill is to be passed in Congress, Obama will not sign it at all. The House and the Senate that is dominated by the Republicans are expected to vote for the passing of the Keystone bill within the week.

The pipeline, if approved, would allow the movement of crude oil from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. This long-standing issue has led to numerous debates among politicians, environmentalists and energy companies.

Supporters of the bill are saying that if it is to be approved, it would create 42,000 jobs. However, the opponents of the bill are citing concerns regarding the environment and countering the statement about the jobs pointing out that the Keystone XL pipeline will only be creating around 35 permanent jobs.

An environmental review by the State Department also said the Keystone XL pipeline will not have any significant impact on the greenhouse gas emissions, which is also a growing problem today.

Obama's stand on the pipeline bill has been talked about as the Keystone XL needs a presidential permit but the president has rejected the permit application three years ago. The Democrats are also at odds against the bill as there are those who favor the project.

American Petroleum Institute CEO Jack Gerard released a statement conveying his disappointment with Obama's planned move. He adds that it does not promise great relationships between the White House and the Capitol Hill.

Gerard also said that there might not be enough votes to override Obama's veto but says that he believes sometime this year, the Keystone XL pipeline bill will be approved.
