Its leash was tied to a steel railing at the Ayr train station, and it was just lying on the floor beside a suitcase that contained its food, pillow, bowl and toys.
The dog's name is Kai, authorities said, after they found the information in the microchip embedded in the canine's body. The microchip also revealed that the dog was a male mix breed shar-pei.
Stewart Taylor, an inspector at the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), said they managed to contact the owner whose name was registered in the dog's microchip, but were informed that the said owner had sold Kai in 2013.
They had no further information as to who bought Kai from its previous owner.
This prompted the SPCA to post an appeal on Facebook requesting for any information that would help them locate Kai's most recent owner.
"This case highlights the potential consequences of selling an animal online as it often leads to the impulse-buying of pets that people know very little about. Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible," Taylor said in a statement on the SPCA website.
A lot of netizens have voiced their condemnation for the person who abandoned Kai at the train station.
Kai is around two to three years old. Police assured the public that they will look after the dog until they find someone who would care for him. They are hoping to find Kai a great home and a lover owner soon.
Abandoning an animal is an offense under Scotland's Animal Health and Welfare Act. Anyone found guilty of abandonment will be banned from having animals as pets for a specific period of time, or for the rest of his or her life depending on the gravity of the case.
