Hong Kong ranked in at number 10, with the average sandwich costing $19.80. Prices were calculated by the cost of a standard club sandwich in 30 hotels in the capital or most important tourist city across five, four, and three-star hotels, with 840 hotels canvassed around the world.

The index compares prices paid by travellers at hotel restaurants in each city, and aims to "offer travellers a simple price comparison to show how far their money may stretch in each country," said Hotels.com's Alison Couper.

"The club sandwich, available on hotel menus across the globe, is the perfect spending barometer, helping tourists factor into their travel plans the everyday cost of simple items such as food and drink" she said.

Paris was last year's most expensive sandwich destination, this year, it slipped to second place with an average chicken, lettuce, mayonnaise and bacon sandwich going for $27.45. Closely behind were Norway goes for an average of $26.72, Sweden goes for an average of $23.12 and Denmark goes for an average of $22.33.

New York City, the only US city to make the list of top 28 expensive places to order a sandwich, where a club goes for an average of $17.51 and some Midtown Manhattan hotels offering them for around just $7.
