Angelina Jolie is Now Royalty

Call her Dame Angelina Jolie.

Hollywood's highest paid actress and the fiancé of Brad Pitt was made an Honorary Dame of the British Empire yesterday by Queen Elizabeth II for her humanitarian work in defending women against violence.

The Oscar-winning actress was named an Honorary Dame--the female version of a Knight--by the Queen. Since she isn't a British citizen, Angelina will not be allowed to use the title of Dame before her name, but she will be recognized as a Dame.

Angelina, a United Nations special envoy, received the honor yesterday for her work combating sexual violence in war zones. She promotes humanitarian causes and is noted for her work with refugees as a Special Envoy and former Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Angelina said she intends to do fewer movies and will instead focus on humanitarian work. She said that "to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to."

She was among hundreds of people recognized in the Queen's annual Birthday Honors List for services to their community or national life.

Among those honored with Angelina were actress Maggie Smith, who was made a Companion of Honor, an award limited to 65 people of distinction.

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis was made a Knight-and can call himself Sir Daniel-for his services to drama.

Damian Lewis, the star of the hit US TV series Homeland, was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire or OBE.

Britain's honors are bestowed by the reigning monarch. The honors in descending order are knighthoods; Commander of the Order of the British Empire or CBE; OBE and MBE.

Knights are addressed as "Sir" or "Dame." Recipients of the other honors have no title, but can put the letters after their names.
