Project Loon of Google a Few Steps Away From Reality
Staff Reporter | | Jun 18, 2014 02:05 AM EDT |
Just like many other rural towns of Brazil, Campo Major has minimal internet access. The locals have to keep looking for spots at high altitude for receiving mobile signals. Many even climb trees for it.
This whole activity has become so common that people have coined a term "fireflying" for the same when it is carried out at nights. This is because when people wander at streets for signals at night they give an impression of a group of fireflies from a distance.

However, much to the delight of the residents of the town, the local school got the privilege of immediate and stable internet access, just a few weeks back. It was not because of fiber cables or any such connection, but due to the Google's Wi-Fi balloons floating high in the air.
With the major objective of providing Internet access to even the remotest corners on the face of the Earth, Google officially launched the Project Loon balloon last June.
Now, one year into the projects the company has managed to increased the balloon strength, and has brought upon many small changes to them which will increase the ease of connectivity. Their testing of the project at Campo Major has been quite successful.
"Launching near the equator taught us to overcome more dramatic temperature profiles, dripping humidity and scorpions. And we tested LTE technology for the first time; this could enable us to provide an Internet signal directly to mobile phones, opening up more options for bringing Internet access to more places." Said a representative of Google on their official Project Loon Google Plus page.
