Twitter has suspended at least six accounts associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, otherwise referred to as ISIS, as the militant group gains ground in Syria and Iraq.
One of the accounts in question was called @Nnewsi and had around 20,000 followers. According to Buzzfeed, the source which broke the story, the Twitter account live-tweeted ISIS' advance across Iraq and was subsequently suspended.

A number of other ISIS-related Twitter accounts exist, some of which claim direct affiliation with the extremist group. According to reports, ISIS regularly posts updates, photos, and messages from group leaders on the social networking site.
WikiLeaks got involved in the drama by releasing its own tweet denouncing Twitter's suspension of the ISIS accounts.
"We denounce @Twitter's censorship of ISIS news account @Nnewsi" the Tweet read.
ISIS seeks to establish a Sunni Islamic caliphate which bridges the borders of Iraq and Syria. ISIS is an offspring of Al Qaeda and has been in conflict with Iraq's Shia-dominated government.
Over the past week, ISIS has made large strides across northern Iraq, and has captured the second largest city in the nation, Mosul. The extremist group also claimed to have driven back Iraqi troops and executed around 1,700 soldiers in a mass killing.
This isn't the first time Twitter has made a move to suspend controversial accounts. In September 2013, the site cut the Al Shabaab accounts that were live-tweeting the militant group's attack on the West Gate Mall in Kenya.
The popular social media site has a policy against threatening language on Twitter, but can also shut down an account on request of the government.
Twitter's policy states:
"Users may not make direct, specific threats of violence against others, including threats against a person or group on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, or disability."
