The first ever free ascent of climbing's most difficult challenges, the Dawn Wall, was recently completed by duo Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson.

Nineteen days after the pair started toward their goal, they reached summit of the 3,000 foot rock known as El Capitan in Yosemite Park.

The goal is more than just the accomplishment of a climb.

Instead, it is the realization of Caldwell's vision to free climb and scale the previously unscaleable mountain.

For the longest time, the mountain was considered too steep and lacking enough cracks or seams for free rock climbing.

However, Caldwell would not be denied. Seven years ago, as he was exploring the historic granite face, the wheels set in motion for one of free climbing's most amazing goals ever achieved.

Jorgeson offered that the effort was not to conquer. Rather, it was simply a realization of a dream.

Free climbing is the use of one's hands and feet to climb a wall, using only ropes and other gears to stop a fall.

Caldwell and Jorgeson's goal was to free climb the wall without falling or returning to the ground in between.

Their ascent began on December 27 and they were content with living on the side of El Capitan for as long as it took them to reach the top. They had a base camp consisting of three portaledges, and ate whole wheat bagels topped with various ingredients for breakfast.

One of the friends waiting would also send down supplies and caches of water every week to help them out.

Clearly, these two had thought of everything they needed to realize their dream.

In a blog, Caldwell said that the Dawn Wall was the only constant in his life. It was an escape from the pain he felt when his former wife left him. Now, it symbolizes something greater for Caldwell.

"For me the Dawn Wall is the perfect venue for some of the most important values I want to show [my son] Fitz," Caldwell wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of him hugging his son. "Optimism, perseverance, dedication and the importance of dreaming big."
