American scientists have developed a thought-controlled helicopter

According to the Sina Technology News on June 16, 2013, the American scientists have developed a though-controlled helicopter - researchers from the University of Minnesota have been able to control a small helicopter using only their minds. The control for the helicopter is very simple: "if you want it to go up, think about it going up. If you want it to go down, think about it going down," said one of the researchers. The development shows a potential of technology that could be used to help the disable people to interact with the world around them.

"Our study shows that for the first time, humans are able to control the flight of flying robots using just their thoughts, sensed from noninvasive brain waves." Said Bin He, the lead author of the study Professor from the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering.

In the past, there have been other brain-controlled devices, but the project created by Professor Bin He's team provides greatly smooth control - and doesn't require drilling holes in your head.

Brad Edelman, a graduate student working on the project, said, "It's completely non-invasive. Nobody has to have a chip implanted in their head!"

"Our next goal is to control robotic arms using noninvasive brain wave signals, with the eventual goal of developing brain-computer interfaces that aid patients with disabilities or neurodegenerative disorders," said Professor He.

"The ultimate application really is to benefit disabled patients who cannot move or patients that suffer with movement disorders," Prof. He continues, "We want to control a wheelchair, and turn on the TV, and most importantly - this is my personal dream - to develop a technology to use the subject's intention to control an artificial limb in that way, and make it as natural as possible."
