McMahon would go to his room and lie on his bed when his head is excruciatingly painful. Sometimes so unbearable that he thought about killing himself.
"I am glad I don't have any weapons in the house or else I am pretty sure I wouldn't be here," said McMahon. "It got to be that bad."
There are more than 4,500 former National Football League (NFL) players who filed a federal lawsuit against the NFL in California, accusing teams of illegally dispensing powerful drugs in order to keep players in the field without knowing the long-term consequences. They are asking a total of almost $900 million for damages.
McMahon is one of those former players who suffer from dementia as well as former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett.
McMahon believes that his dementia was brought about by the constant beating he got while playing football. His suicidal tendencies desist when he had a treatment that drains spinal fluid from his brain.
54-year-old McMahon also said that he had been diagnosed around three to five times of suffering from concussions. He also had injuries to the kidney, broken ribs, an addiction to painkillers and even a broken neck that team doctors never mentioned to him about.
Roughly five years ago, McMahon had a series of X-rays and MRI. His doctors told him that he had broken his neck at some point during his football career. He believes that it happened when he was playing for the Minnesota Vikings in a playoff match against the New York Giants in 1993.
McMahon was sandwiched by two Giants players that nearly broke him in two. He was then led to the sidelines but after only 10 minutes of rest, he was later put back-in only to be grazed be a Giants defender on the head. His legs went numb and he was sent to the dugout.
Team doctor asked McMahon on how he felt but never examined him. "No doubt about it," said McMahon. The team knew that he had broken his neck.
