The hype surrounding Hollywood's award season has led up to this-the Oscars 2015 nominations list.

Announced early this Thursday, a few snubs and surprises were notable in this year's nods. Wes Anderson's art house awards show favorite seems to stand strong with nine nominations, similar to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman.

Major snubs include Selma, the historical biopic about Martin Luther King Jr. Despite recognition for best original song and director as well as strong performances from its actors, the Academy failed to give it its due. A best actress nod for awards darling, Amy Adams was also notable.

Meanwhile, nominations for technical achievements were much welcome surprises for underdog, comic book adaptation, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Birdman ties with The Grand Budapest Hotel for most number of nominations, followed by The Imitation game with 8, Boyhood with 6, American Sniper with 6, Whiplash, Interstellar and Foxcatcher with 5.
