Facebook Open Sources Artificial Intelligence Tools

Facebook is bringing more tools than ever before to the artificial intelligence community, making all of its AI tools open source for researchers and companies.
Previously only publishing AI algorithms and ideas into journals, this new effort allows more community development and also brings Facebook's wealth of AI knowledge to the global space.

Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research Lab is in charge of the AI tools, created a year ago to work on "deep learning" and AI integration with the Facebook News Feed.
AI is already used on Facebook to understand what content the user wants to see and decides other factors on the News Feed automatically.
Facebook will upload the AI tools onto Torch, an open source center for AI tools, used by Google and Twitter. Even though the tools are open, Facebook artificial intelligence researcher and software engineer Soumith Chintala said "You have to have a lot of skill to implement it efficiently."
Facebook believes its own AI tools are the most efficient and well documented in the industry, "We benchmarked our code, and these are the fastest open source implementations out there," Chintala says "people didn't explore certain areas because they didn't think it was possible and now they are."
The new AI tools should free up new startup and researchers time - instead of rewriting existing algorithms the startup can work on new research into deep learning.
Having open source AI tools also removes the risk of companies inadvertently creating detrimental systems, something The Future of Life Institute wants to explore in more detail with the $10 million backing from Elon Musk.
