One Direction member, Zayn Malik, who recently celebrated his birthday has just posted an Instagram photo that features a slicked back, shorter version of the luscious locks that fans know and love.

And because anything and everything that One Direction does is cause for speculation and scrutiny for its dedicated fan base, Malik's new look was enough to trigger fandom to freak out.

The cut was courtesy of Kieron Webb, The London Barber's Creative Director.

Prior to snipping of his tresses, Malik took to Twitter to announce his intent to change his 'do-

"It's been a year it was well needed," he tweeted followed by an image of his new hairstyle, which features an undercut, buzz cut along the side of his head with the front slicked back to offer a sleeker and more mature look for the 20 year old singer.

Fans, of course, were quick to share what they thought of his look:
