Obama Has Not Kept 'Promises' Stated In Past State Of The Union Addresses, Critics Say

United States President Barack Obama has been giving the annual State Of The Union Address for six years now and this Tuesday's address is being closely watched by critics who have pointed out that the president has not kept his promises in the past.

Adding jobs, cutting taxes, increasing nuclear power, ending wars and a whole lot more are some of the pledges of Obama, but most of his initiatives never really got through. Critics are then saying that the speech today will follow the same pattern.

The White House has recently announced some of the plans of the president, which were dubbed as ambitious since they need the approval of the Republican-controlled Congress.

Back in 2009, the President said in his speech that renewable energy was part of his economic recovery plan, with the government looking to double the nation's renewable energy supply for the next three years. It was not that successful as it only increased from 10.62 percent in 2009 to 12.6 percent in 2011.

Some of his plans such as deficit reduction got through. The deficit of the United States fell from US$1.41 trillion ton US$680 billion by 2013. Also, the college graduation rate increased from 41 percent to 43 percent but is still one of the slowest growth rates in the world.

In 2010, Obama promised program cuts that would eliminate the programs that the government's budget could not afford. However, the plan did not materialize as the Congressional Budget Office reported in 2013 that there were wasteful and non-performing programs that were granted a total of US$100 billion in budget.

Also, he talked about the ObamaCare being able to preserve the right of Americans who have insurance to keep their doctors and the plans that they are paying. However, this was not true as people who availed the Affordable Care Act has been complaining about the benefits they received.

In 2011, he talked about immigration reform but until last year, that law still has not been passed by Congress although the president did act alone by passing executive actions to move it forward.

Obama also tackle tax reform but it has never pushed through. He will be once again talking about tax increase this year and he is reportedly looking to tax top earners to benefit the middle class.

In 2012, the president focused on oil and gas drilling due to the high prices of gas. He noted that his administration will be opening 75 percent of the country's potential oil and gas resources but the target areas were off limits such as the Pacific and Alaskan waters.

In 2013, President Obama promised to eliminate the al Qaeda extremist group but it has become more powerful in the past year.

Although the country's economy has improved from the recession that the people experienced, other important issues remain stuck in a limbo.
