(Photo : Reuters) In China, it is illegal to determine what the sex of a baby will be unless it is medically necessary.
Chinese Health Authorities released a statement on Wednesday saying that the gender imbalance among newborns in China is currently the worst and most serious in the world.
When speaking of the gender imbalance of newborns in the country, the group said that it was the worst and most prolonged in the world. They added that this was a direct result of China's very strict policy that allows families only one child.

The statement made by the Chinese Health Authorities adds to the numerous calls people have made throughout the years for the government to scrap their family planning restrictions.
China has the largest population of any country in the world, and scholars say that there is a demographic crisis right now.
China shares in the traditional biases of most Asian countries in that they mostly favor sons for their offspring. If a family knew that they were to have a girl, most would resort to abortion in order to ensure that they would get a boy for their one child instead. About 118 boys were born for every 100 girls.
This is in contrast to the global average of 103 boys to 107 girls.
The National Health and Family Planning Commission acknowledged though that they had a gender imbalance issue. In response to it, they said that they would step up supervision on fetal sex determination, a practice that is banned in China.
They also acknowledged that for these, women in China were transferring blood samples overseas in order to find out the gender of their children-to-be. Researchers say that one effect of the gender imbalance is that some men will remain unmarried, leading to instability and even raising the risks of anti-social and violent behavior.
China already tried to address this issue. In 2013, they attempted to relax their family planning rules restrictions allowing for two children per family. Yet critics say that the relaxing of the rules came too late.
