It was an embarrassment waiting to happen. And it did, thanks to a not-too-clever American exchange student.

The fire department of the university city of Tuebingen in Germany freed a 20-year old male American exchange student after he trapped himself inside a giant vagina sculpture.

On a dare, the unidentified American climbed into a 32-ton red marble sculpture resembling a giant vagina that stands outside the Institute for Microbiology and Virology at Tubingen University.

The sculpture by Peruvian artist Fernando de la Jara is called "Chacan," which means "making love." The six-foot tall sculpture is worth some US$200,000.  It's been standing unmolested for 13 years - until now.

The American got into the vagina but couldn't get out because his legs and feet became hopelessly entangled at the bottom of the enormous vagina carved out of red marble.

"It was a dare," said Tuebingen fire department squad leader Markus Mozer. "The young man had tried to pose for an unusual photo and climbed into the artwork."

"We were able to pull the victim out with our bare hands after about 30 minutes," Mozer said.

It took 22 German rescue workers to free the overly scandalous American. The rescuers, consisting of firefighters and paramedics, arrived in five fire trucks.

Local newspaper Schwaebisches Tagblatt wryly noted that a "forceps delivery was not necessary." It said the American student was "stuck in a stone vulva."

A bystander at the "crime scene" took photos of the unusual rescue that he later posted on Imgur, a popular online image hosting service.

Tuebingen mayor Boris Palmer said he could not understand how the student got himself in that situation in the first place, "even taking into account adolescent fantasy."

Needless to say, the Tuebingen fire department was not amused by a rescue effort that took up too much time and resources.
