Microsoft Hits Back at Google; Offers 15 GB of Free Storage on OneDrive

The "War in the Clouds" has gotten hotter.
Apparently responding to widespread criticism of the puny free storage space on its free cloud storage app OneDrive, Microsoft has more than doubled the amount of storage space it offers to 15 GB from 7 GB.
Microsoft also hopes the move will get OneDrive users to sign up for Office 365, which is touting the promise of huge OneDrive storage. The company announced that all versions of Office 365 will now come with a massive 1 terabyte of OneDrive storage compared to the former 20 GB.

The 1 TB per person is available for up to five people on Office 365 Home, which is priced at $9.99 a month.
With Office 365 Personal ($6.99 per month) and University ($79.99 for four years), however, a subscriber will get 1 TB per subscription.
The upgrades are clearly aimed against Google and its popular Google Drive that also provides 15 GB of free cloud storage service. Google Drive has more than 120 million active users.
It also hits at Google Drive, the home of Google Docs, an office suite of productivity applications that offer collaborative editing on documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
Last March, Google cut the prices of Google Drive's monthly storage plans. The 100 GB plan previously priced at $4.99 a month is now only $1.99. The price for the 1 TB plan fell from $49.99 to just $9.99.
OneDrive Group Program Manager Omar Shahine said their data reveals that three out of four people have less than 15GB of files on their PC.
"Factoring in what they may also have stored on other devices, we believe providing 15GB for free right out of the gate - with no hoops to jump through - will make it much easier for people to have their documents, videos, and photos available in one place."
Shahine said that with OneDrive, Microsoft wants to give subscribers one place for all their stuff: photos, videos, documents and other files.
