Police are actively investigating the death of a transgender woman who was found shot and burned behind a dumpster in Fort Myers, Florida June 19.
The victim has been identified in local media reports as Yaz'min Shancez and was discovered behind the dumpster of a rental business. The 31-year-old victim had multiple gunshot and burn wounds.

Although no eyewitnesses have come forward, authorities have copied and are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras near the scene of the crime.
Police said they have no reason to believe the murder was a hate-fueled crime due to Shancez' being transgender. When speaking of the crime, Fort Myers Police Department Lt. Jay Rodriguez referred to the victim by her birth name, stating that the police department "does not categorize victims as transgender or LGBT.
"His transgender status would only be taken into consideration by investigators if he was specifically targeted because of it," Rodriguez said. "Other than that, we would treat this case like our other homicide cases."
Shancez' body was found exactly two years after her sister Cha'Riah Owens' death. Owens was 16 when she was found shot to death alongside her 23-year-old boyfriend, Jerrett Byrd, in a Toyota Camry in the parking lot of Gulfstream Isles Apartments.
Owens' 3-year-old cousin was found unharmed in the backseat of the car.
Byrd had been arrested previously in Collier County on charges of burglary and grand theft, spending 19 months in prison on those charges. Owens had no apparent arrest record in the county.
Authorities would not specify whether or not there was a connection between Shancez' death and the death of her sister.
Hundreds of friends, family, and other supporters held a candlelight vigil for the victim at the city's Centennial Park Sunday night. The family has also created an online fundraiser to help raise money for Shancez' funeral.
