(Photo : Microsoft) Microsoft has unveiled Windows Holographic and HoloLens at its Windows 10 event, and they look super-futuristic.

Magic Leap might take the cake for wacky virtual reality designs, but Microsoft is certainly pushing for the crown with its new Windows Holographic announcement at its event on Wednesday.

Windows Holographic - which uses the Windows 10 interface - allows users to interact with the platform on an augmented reality platform.

The augmented reality (AR) HoloLens headset is able to track objects, proximity and other things, to project holographic interfaces and objects onto real-life objects and panels.

Microsoft showed the Windows interface and using gestures to move through the platform, alongside some other wacky ideas for how people will utilize AR in the home.

This came alongside Minecraft inside of AR, allowing users to build and destroy holographic buildings and potentially mobs.

The landscape for gaming and productivity on this device is immense, but Microsoft fans shouldn't get too excited, considering how poor Xbox Kinect turned out after an early buzz on the platform.

Even with the look into Minecraft on AR, this does not look like a virtual reality headset in the traditional sense, and will not compete with Samsung's Gear VR or Oculus Rift in the gaming scene.

Instead, this should allow all sorts of augmented reality experiences, and will compete with private augmented reality startup Magic Leap, who are also looking into every type of scenario where AR would be a preferred platform.

It is not clear how much the HoloLens will cost or when Microsoft intends to launch Windows Holographic.
