MAKERS China Executive Producer, Yang Lan may not ring a bell to America, but the Chinese media mogul, often referred to as the “Oprah of China,” is making a name for herself in the global arena. And like Oprah Winfrey, Yang’s initiatives on women have been making noise in the international scene.

TIME reported that Yang has “expanded her reach,” as her company, Sun Media Group inked an agreement with MAKERS and AOL to bring “the stories of women to China.”

The idea sprung from the documentary, “Makers: Women Who Make America,” aired on PBS last February 26, 2013. In an effort to tell the history of Chinese feminism, Yang is set to bring their personal stories in platform to China.

In April this year, MAKERS and AOL announced the upcoming project with Sun Media Group, the company owned by Yang, who also acts as the Executive Producer of MAKERS China.

China and the world will have access to the history of top women of the Republic through Yang’s panel show called, “Her Village,” a program using “The View” – style format.

Described by TIME as “supersized web platform,” Yang’s “Her Village” will serve as a distribution platform for MAKERS China. With the recorded monthly audience of 300 million, the project’s creators expressed confidence that MAKERS China will be a success in the region.

Yang herself has sounded optimistic when interviewed by TIME on how the Internet can play an essential part on the upcoming project.

“The Chinese Internet is developing at a breathtaking pace,” Yang said as quoted by TIME, emphasizing that there are an estimated 600 million mobile Internet users in China.

“It’s opening a new area for us because we are a private media company while all the TV networks are highly regulated and government-owned. Suddenly the internet gave us this open space to reach our audience directly with no barrier in-between,” Yang added, according to TIME, explaining how the platform can provide free medium to the audience.

Yang has initially talked to her first top 10 Most Powerful Women of China, who included a sexologist, a dance artist, an actress, a government official, interest lawyer, investigative journalist and more. And the “China’s Oprah,” could not be more excited to share their stories.

“Our Makers represent different kinds of breakthroughs,” said Yang, according to Forbes, adding, “We have the first sociologist who speaks for the homosexual community, which was illegal 20 years ago.”

But now with the new platform, Yang believes that despite the “limitations” the ability of the creators to get them on the web, will allow the voices of these women heard.

“It is about maneuvering, but you still get the chance to get the story told from a different perspective. People are so smart enough to get a fuller picture. You just have to push the envelope on a constant basis,” Yang added, said Forbes.
