North Carolina Next In Line For Google Fiber Development

Google is reportedly eyeing up two cities in North Carolina for further Google Fiber deployment, following the start of development in Austin, Texas.

Raleigh and Durham will both host events on Wednesday and Thursday, regarding Google Fiber deployment. The two cities were both short-listed in Google's expansion post, which they published early in 2014.

Along with Chapel Hill in North Carolina, these three cities make up the 'Research Triangle', an area with a lot of education and high-tech business development in the past fifty years.

Palo Alto in Silicon Valley will also be having a talk with Google over the development of fiber optic, which would bring high-speed broadband to Google's rival Apple.

There is a whole host of other potential places, but it looks like for 2015 North Carolina will be the focus. Google recently sent an open letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), claiming it would be able to develop more broadband if Title II reclassification was added to broadband providers.

Google Fiber consists of three broadband options, a 5Mbps free update (with $300 installation), a 1Gbps $70 per month subscription and a $120 per month 1Gbps and Google TV subscription.

Reports say Google will use an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) using Sprint and T-Mobile's network to create a new option for Google Fiber, consisting of unlimited wireless data per month for a certain amount.

Community broadband is also steadily growing as Google Fiber seeks more deployment areas, and the FCC will contest laws in 19 U.S. states, currently blocking community driven broadband projects.
