iPhone Accounts For 50% of U.S. Smartphone Activations in Q4

(Photo : Reuters) Apple is looking to fix some of the underlining performance issues on iOS 9.

There have been many reports on how well Apple is doing in South-East Asia, conquering China's premium market, winning in Taiwan and Singapore and also defeating Samsung in its home-town South Korea.

But how is Cupertino performing in the U.S? Even better, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), claiming iPhones accounted for 50 percent of activations over quarter four.

This is a slight increase in the U.S.; Apple currently holds 45 percent of sales in the country. Brand loyalty played a big part, with 86 percent of customers upgrading from an older iPhone.

Samsung added 26 percent to the pie in quarter four, still showing good numbers despite a rough year in mobile. LG came third with 11 percent, still in the shadow of the other South Korean company, but quickly pushing to a top five spot worldwide.

Surprisingly, Motorola managed to get fourth place in the U.S. with 4 percent of the market, a decent number considering the Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and Verizon Droid are the only devices Motorola currently sells.

HTC came in fifth place with 2 percent, and even more surprisingly Amazon managed to get 1 percent with its Fire Phone. We are not sure how much one percent translates into sales, since the report does not note how many activations happened in quarter four 2014.

Apple always has strong results in quarter three and four, when it launches the iPhone. The real test is if Apple can keep activations steady throughout 2015.
