The Warner Bros.-film has already bagged six Academy Award nominations, including best picture and best actor for Cooper.
American Sniper's success is unprecedented, helping boost box office sales, which is now up by 9.3 percent compared to last year's.
The Clint Eastwood-directed drama about Navy SEAL marksman Chris Kyle has been the box-office champ after it was given wide release last weekend. It already beat Avatar's record as the highest-grossing movie for a January opening. It is also the highest grossing movie among the Oscars best picture contenders.
Trailing behind Sniper on the second spot is the Universal thriller The Boy Next Door, topbilled by Jennifer Lopez, who plays the role of a teacher who falls for a younger, obsessive guy played by Ryan Guzman. The film debuted with a modest US$15 million.
Meanwhile, the Liam Neeson-starrer Taken 3 still hangs on at the top 5 with US$7.6 million.
The next new release, the animated fantasy Lucasfilm and Disney's Strange Magic proved a flop, landing the seventh spot and earning only a meager US$5.5 million.
Lionsgate's Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow starrer, Mortdecai, earned a disappointingly US$4.1 million, barely hanging on the ninth spot. This follows preceding box-office bombs that Depp has starred in recently: Transcendence, The Lone Ranger, 'Dark Shadows and The Rum Diary.
