Uber Makes Its Way Back Into India With Taxi License Application

(Photo : Reuters ) Following a rape charge on an Uber driver, the mobile taxi service is implementing new safety precautions.
Uber was recently banned in India following an incident where one of its passengers was raped, but that is not stopping the transportation app company from finding ways to potentially continue offering its services in the country.
In an unprecedented move, Uber applied for a taxi license on Jan. 21 for the city of New Delhi and announced that it would begin resuming its operations in India.

In the past, Uber has always emphasized that the company is not actually a taxi service and instead is simply a technology company that connects riders with drivers. The notion has caused a lot of controversy among taxi companies, as Uber does not have to worry about certain regulations such as vehicle and background checks.
The lack of background checks for drivers posed a heavy security threat for passengers, as evident by one of Uber's customers reportedly being raped. This led to India implementing measures that ban all web-based taxi companies from offering its services unless they apply for a taxi license.
For the first time ever, Uber has applied for a taxi license and will meet India's taxi company requirements of having at least 200 vehicles, a 24-hour call center, as well as a "panic button" for passengers as an added measure of security.
"As we resume operations in Delhi, we are only allowing driver-partners who have undergone re-verification of their Police clearance in the last six weeks to get back on the platform," Uber said in a press release on Friday.
Uber also mentioned that they will be ramping up its initial security requirements for drivers.
"For an additional layer of screening, we are implementing independent background checks on all driver partners, plus vehicle documentation reviews," the company added.
